To make sure it wasn't a problem between me and init, I disabled some of
the VC's (using a #) and ran "init q" and things went as expected -
however, still no getty on S1.

Even though the SCO version is "free" (+S&H) it's only to students and

configured here because diald doesn't seem to be doing it for me even

I'm not sure that those were the errors I was getting; however, I tried to
eliminate the possibility of bad disks by using many different fresh
diskette sets. I reformatted them before writing the image to them - no
the dialup connection going. The first stage was to get a working
ppp connection which takes you through getting a chat script going, etc.
Then, once that's done, it moves into discussing how to configure Diald.
It wasn't clearly stated that you couldn't use the same scrip

problem to be with my DNS config. We don't have an ISDN connection and
pinging the IP addr directly results in no delays.
I'll hit the DNS docs and do some RTFM and see if I can figure out what's
wrong.

I've had success with this only because I have a static IP address with my
ISP. If you are running PPP with dynamic addressing, then I think you can
forget it....

kernel:
ramdisk_size=16384
The number is KB, so the value above is 16MB.
