Yes, this pops up with a particular Intel NIC driver also, and affects all debian past 2.2.16 The simple key is to unpack source that is no longer unpacked by defaults. apt-get source kernel-headers-2.2.17 You might need to do this first... apt-get install kernel-headers-2.2.17

Since so many people are harping on them, I got a Compaq Presario 7478 with an extra 64MB (tot 128) and a Voodoo3 for < 1100USD. AMD K-6 II 500 30 Gig HD CD-RW DVD-R floppy 2 ISA, 4 PCI, 1 AGP, 2 USB decent keyboard Debian noticed both CD-RW and DVD-R right away. Red Hat only noticed one of them.

Ah, I see now how -R and .* could get kinda crazy. Thank you. But I changed the perms of / a bit, but it still won't work (cd is now working for regular user, but no logins, nor does ls work). Does anyone have a proper perms setup for / ? Is there any chance chmod -R o-rwx .* started working on
