NThis system (Compaq Presario (tower) 7478, see below) has recently
been upgraded to Debian-2.2r2 and everything was working
so well.
I edited /etc/lilo.conf
ran lilo -v and got no errors.
Now, reboots yield

Of course, since I was using 2.2.17, I needed
to
apt-get install kernel-headers-2.2.17 &&
apt-get source kernel-headers-2.2.17
to avoid the "missing modversions.h" error
that started this.

In addition to the DBI module, you will

DBI is a very popular module.

You might need to do this first...

Any ideas?
I don't have any SCSI devices, I just need it for to
use cdrecord with an ATAPI IDE.
I guess I am going to have to recompile my kernel,
but first I have to FIND the darn thing.
sr_mod, I feel confident, will be the only remaining
module I need to install.

I have one backup mechanism, a CD-Rewritable drive.
The CD-Rewritable howto says I need SCSI support.

From what I've been able to gather,
chroot can be secure,
but only if the user can never get root.
FreeBSD's jail had a recent problem.
Mounting /proc inside the chroot is not a good idea.

I tried, in a subdir of /root, the command

It changed the permissions on the parent directory,
the parent's parent directory, all the way up.
Now only root can use my computer.
Was chmod supposed to understand .* so differently
than /bin/ls does?

Ah, I see now how -R and .* could get kinda crazy.
Thank you.
But I changed the perms of / a bit, but it still won't
work (cd is now working for regular user, but no logins,
nor does ls work).
Does anyone have a proper perms setup for / ?
Is there any chance chmod -R o-rwx .* started working

Thanks for the very full explanation.
Sigh.
Reinstall? I have done fresh installs many
times. Sorry I don't know the drill for reinstalls.
I could move the stuff I want to save to one parti

PS Tough to type like that :)
Joost, your solution was such an elegant thing, that to
ruin my system to learn it was fair enough.
Thank you.

What an OS! Debian is awesome.
XFree86 is amazing, also.
Blackbox is a really nice, lightweight wm.
I put gnome on the box, just so I could show somebody that it could act
like Windows, if necessary.
I started XWindows after the upgrade, and it works!
Well, blackbox starts, then Gnome starts

I guess they were thinking I was just standing around waiting for someone

Either that, or the fine print is that to try, you need to give them two
million dollars.
