When you get to this point you shouldn't have even installed a kernel yet.
Make a good /etc/apt/source.list, include main archive for unstable... Do this:
"apt-get install kernel-image-2.4.21-2-"
Make the menu entry and restart the machine.
Well it's brief but enough to help.
Let's hope this helps.

I've played around w/ ethtool trying to force

difference. I saw some
similar issues w/ other folks, but didn't see an
actual solution. Any ideas/thoughts
on what's going on? Thanks in advance for a

I run WP8 that came with Corel Linux so it is a .deb package. Woody has all
the depends for WP8, libc5, type1inst if you have the fonts, and a couple
more that i don;'t recall from memory. If you get a prompt for a
executable.

x-window-system is a meta-package, hence the depends. You can delete this

Are you using USB 1 or 2 ? USB 1.x would seem s
it appears you had LPR stuff installed at the same time. Start fresh,
purge all printing systems except cups. It looks like you are not using
Woody so I can't say how to fix the conflicts issue.
Cups uses a different printcap file, /etc/printcap.cups. I

When you run sndconfig are you root? It may be a permissions thing,
accessing sound as a user you may have to be in the 'audio' group.

Let us know if this works. I have read another reference to this topic (suse
list) that uses a aic79xx module,(same mb) which isn't available in Woody
kernel sources.

I use a Brother 1270N, cups has a driver for it , it has a nic card and
picks up an IP address from my dhcp server. I like having a nic card in the
printer for sharing on a network.

whenever I attempt to start it. The configuration is quite generic...
I've accepted all the debconf defaults, and haven't otherwise modified
freenet.conf. For the JVM, I've tried using blackdown (1.3.1 & 1.4)
and kaffe.
