The permissions for the mount point do not matter. Do you have a line

Maybe you have to configure the source first (use the config file in
/boot for this). Or you try to compile the driver using the
kernel-headers-2.4.18-bf2.4 package instead of the source.
lace "nv" with "nvidia" in your config file

Does CTRL+ALT+DEL not work? Which login manager do you use? If you use
XDM, you can switch to KDM. KDM allows you to shutdown your computer if
it is properly configured. Call kcontrol as root (e.g. kdesu kcontrol)

Try
apt-get install kdm

Check the permissions for kppp. The kppp executable normally is only
executable by owner (root) and group (dip). Make sure you are member of
the dip group. If you add yourself to the dip group while logged in
with your user id, you have t
sions of these files. Maybe
dpkg-reconfigure cdrecord

Looks to me more like there is a new revision of Woody (there is a
Debian3.0r2 directory on the ftp server). So maybe the servers just
have problems wit
-source-2.4.18/.config,
changing the EXTRAVERSION in the Makefile to -bf2.4 and running make
oldconfig. Maybe you also have to run make dep.
However, probably you don't need the complete source and the headers are
sufficient. Try installing the kernel-headers-2.4.18-bf2.4 instead
first.

already comes with Kernel 2.4.18 packages.
2.2.20-idepci is the default installation kernel, you can however also
install Debian using 2.4.18-bf2.4. or install some 2.4.18 package at
any later time. Make sure security.debian.org is in your sources.list,
and install kernel-image-2.4.18-1-686/
nel is stored in /boot (/boot/config-2.2.20-idepci in
your case). You can try to use it with the new kernel source by copying
it to /path/to/kernel-source/.config and running "make oldconfig".

Either add a line
eepro100
to /etc/modules, manually or by using modconf, or add a line
alias eth0 eepro100
to /etc/modutils/aliases or your own file in /etc/modutils and run
update-modules to save the change to /etc/modules.conf.

/path/to/kernel-source/.config
- ran "make oldconfig"
To see exactly what's going on, you first have to find out which drivers
your ethernet cards use. dmesg | less using the old kernel can tell
you. Next, find out if your new kernel has these drivers, by using make
xconfig or make menu
es to your sources.list.

work for Sound Blaster clones. If the sound device
is connected via PCI, use lspci to get a listing and identify the chip.
If it is connected via ISA, maybe isapnpdump from the isapnptools
package can help you. Taking a look at the bootup information or at
Windows control center can also help.
best r
xtension. Try
dpkg -l kernel-image*
to get a list and see how they are called. Your package probably is
called kernel-image-2.4.22-nvidia

om /etc/modules are loaded by /etc/init.d/modutils. During
boot, it is executed through the symlink /etc/rcS.d/S20modutils.

e proper way to do it?
I installed the driver using the installer from nvidia.com and the
permissions are crw-rw-rw-, only owner.group is root.root, so I think
it should be okay. By the way, did you log out and in again after
adding yourself to the video group? Otherwise the system won't kno
nnections with pon/poff if you are in
the dip group, and you can create your own ones for use with kppp
/without/ kppp being suid root, if you are in the dialout group.

The first one maybe is still not available because of the hack of the
