The best thing in my opinion is procmail, just add these lines to your
.procmailrc file, and all will be WAY better. Make sure you have your
~/.forward file forwarding to procmail.

Hi,
Whenever I log remotely to my Debian system
from a Sun xterm, the environment does not
seem to be correct (I can not use "vi").
Setting the "TERM=xterm" and "EDITOR=vi"
does not help. What are the correct environment
variables(I use /bin/bash)?

I can't figure this out. Probably cause I'm new at it.
I installed both Real Player and MPlayer for Debian. I downloaded the rpm package and then used alien to 1. convert to .deb and install, and when that didn't seem to work I used alien -i.
Problem is I can't find an executable for either
rite to a floppy nor can I see files on
it.

If you want the networking info from winxp just do this.
Start->Run->cmd
then when the command prompt window pops up type
ipconfig /all
it will print all windows networking info. Voila you have your nameservers.

fine at this point to ~/mbox, but I'm accessing my mail from multiple
clients, and if I leave a client open, I get mailbox locking problems.

I've got a 1gig SCSI HD which linux fails to see it.
Right now it is installed on the 1st SCSI drive which is 540meg.
The SCSI controller is set to IRQ14 and I get errors about this.

everything goes ok until i come to the point when installing from the
(infomagic September) CD.

The problem is in the script /etc/cron.daily/smail.
The line
savelog -o root ...
should be
savelog -u root ...
I think there might even be a man page for savelog.
Fix that and you

for shell, but the client has /bin/bash.
I have tried rebooting all the machines, start-stopping nfs on
the servers, tried different kernals on the app server (one w/
knfsd one w/o).

minimal debian stretch on my UEFI/GPT disk. I then I replaced all
references to "stretch" with "testing" in /etc/apt/sources.list and
executed sudo apt update; sudo apt install gnome-core firefox-esr.
