When I installed the udev packages the start script was installed in
init.d but the link in rc2.d is not created.
What is a smart number for the symbolic link S(??)udev?
I just checked the dependencies and it says mountvirtfs needs to be
started as well. This is not linked in my rc2.d either.

I was looking at the gdesklets package, and it looked interesting enough for me to apt-get it to try it and see how it was. Problem is when I do a "gdesklets start", it times out while trying to connect to the daemon.
I found an old FAQ page on it (page didn't even exist anymore, only the google c
Hi,
I realise this issue isn't "new", but my main problem is finding out
how to resolve the issue, short of upgrading from Woody to Sarge,
which is something that I need to plan carefully (cloning HDD for a
"test upgrade" and all that) :P
Basically, I recently upgraded apache, mysql & php

We've tried to document this. This is not finished, but it works.

Hi all,
I'm still struggling with some behaviors of the package system,
specifically, APTITUDE i think.
I'm using command lines that look like this:

aptitude --without-recommends centericq

How do I specify a name for the computer to use with DHCP?
There is a nam

Hi all,
I'm running debian testing, and trying to make a dvd-video image to burn.
I have the .VOB files and I have made a dvd structure using vobcopy. I'm looking
for a debian tool that makes the .IFO files from those .VOBs. I'd tried with
dvdauthor without success. Is there such a tool?
I don't

Yes, mplayer may use liblame0 (I am the upstream packager of lame).
But I would like to give you all a recommendation: try to use a music

Yet another moral of the story: be paranoid and keep your backups. I
don't leave home when going to work without backing up my system with

I don't red the thread this far so perhaps my solution is not for You.

Hello,
a couple of days ago, when booting into Debian, I could not get a
DHCP-offer, so the network was not brought up.
I assigned an address that was not in use via ifconfig, and tried a
couple of pings.
Pinging a system in the same subnet succeeded, but pinging the gateway
failed.
IP: 10.40.
Are you sure you are not natting / snatting / dnatting incorrectly?
also check "cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward" and it should return 1.
if not, echo 1 >/proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward.
Also check routing tables, do you have multiple tables?

Hi,
I've installed Debian "testing", I have very little experience in

maybe save hours of searching :
