Kernel 2.4.27 got installed by itself when I installed "sarge". don't know why sarge installation does that for Pentium box??

su
do not use the '-' in su command because this invoke the shell which read the
.profile files and over write you XAUTHORITY variable.
You will find a sample .bash_profile under /usr/share/docs/bas
. Obviously, 'user' needs to be a user on the server with sudo
permissions - see man
sudo.

some strange behaviour.
I can't access https web pages from my internal network anymore.
It seems that the masquerading into my local subnet somehow prevents
https packets coming through.

What you need is Wine. This will run many Windows programs as binaries.

If by ".exe" you means an executable compiled in Linux (for example, a fortran
or C executable) you should go to in the folder were the executable resides
and type "./executable_name.extencion" (for example, ./sample.e)
