I have an empty /var/cache/apt/archives directory. For building
a custom CD, I want to have all packages that are installed on the
machine as a file on my computer, e.g. in the /var/cache/apt/archives
directory. Can I make apt-get download all the files for me? There
must be some magic :)

when running Sarge on my laptop, kernel 2.6.7-1-686 and alsa 1.0.5, I
had no problem with this. But now I'm running Ubuntu Hoary, which uses
2.6.10-1-386 and alsa 1.0.8, and sound volume is unusable low.
As you can see, all mixers are at 100% and unmuted:

I remember that with the gnome help browser I could read and navigate
all the man pages installed. Now it seems that isn't possible anymore.
Is there a way to enable such a feature? Or is there a different gnome

I've installed the debian package bcm5700-source.deb and it has created 2 dir:
debian --> contains some changelog, control, rules files
src --> contains Makefile, bcm* files
when I follow Broadcom readme file and make the driver it creates a faulty one with lots of undefined symbols.

I recently installed gnome with the experimental sources
Everything is OK! (what else do you expect?)
but, the menu now it's a lot bigger and have kde stuff with it; this
wasn't like this in gnome 2.8.

On my backup 2.4.26 kernel the mount point for my Sony dvdrw drive is
/dev/sr1.
When I boot to my 2.6.8 kernel /dev/sr1 does not exist. The drive is

Last week I managed - with several false starts - to install the
realtime module and for the past few days I have been able to run
jackd --realtime -d alsa -r 44100
with no problems. Today, working on a totally unrelated issue, I
re-compiled a 2.6.8 bzImage without changing the security opt
WOW!! ok...i was able to get KDE, but now the graphics are completely
screwed up! i may have set the screen resoloution wrong, but im not
sure if i will be able to fix it, my mouse is appearing in 2 or 3
places, everything is scattered all over the screen, my desktop looks
like a Picasso painting!

Of course, you have to make sure you add a line in
/etc/apt/sources.list that includes testing and/or unstable and/or
experimental (alioth), then 'apt-get update'. Then use 'apt-get
install kde/testing' to install kde-3.3.2 (or use aptitude, if you
prefer).

Ok, so I have Debian Sarge installed here and I installed HAL. I Edited
"/etc/defaults/hal", for it to run as root, and added a symlink
"/etc/hal/device.d/fstab-sync.hal -> /usr/sbin/fstab-sync".
When I plug in a usb disk, a mount point in "/media" gets created and an
entry in "/etc/fstab"
