Is /dev/sdb1 mounted? What is the output of mount (with no arguments)? You probably have to Alt-F2 to a new vt and mount /dev/sdb1 somewhere, then specify the path to the debian archive from there. This is how I installed the base system on my PC. In my case, the base_21.tgz file was on a dos part

Found the problem. I had formatted both sdb and sdc as macos 'extended' filesystems for more efficient use of disk space under MacOS 8.1. Lorenz, This may be an erroneous answer, but on my system it is lp0. As I understand it, /dev/lp0 translates to LPT1:. Unless you have two parallel ports, you might not have a valid /dev/lp1 (LPT2:). Could this be the problem ? I think mine gave the same error when I tried to print to it ...
