I even re-did the configuration (using dpkg-recongfigure).

For some reason debian installed X with a really low resolution so I'm
trying to increase my screen resolution from 800x600 to something
like 1024x768.
I tried running dpg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 and it returned

Everything is in that XF86Config-4, create one with dpkg-reconfigure
and another with old xf86config . And run diff for both . You will get
a diffrence.

Where does the XF86Config-4 file live? I thought it was in /etc/X11.

I deleted (saved elsewhere) the XF86Config-4 file and

Hi guys, I'm back. Thanks for the advise, it worked, part way.
I ran apt-get install xserver-xfree86.
Now the problem seems to start at:

Configure appropriate HorizSync and VertRefresh ranges in the Section "Monitor".

Dear all,
with latest xserver-xfree86 ( xserver-xfree8 4.2.1-11 ) I would like
to configure the screen resolution to be 1280x1024 for my LCD monitor.
I am using a Matrox MGA G550 (AGP) card.
In /etc/X11/XF86Config-4, I have the following settings.

So sorry folks, found the answer using google groups.

Bug#206790: missing file on install of 4.2.1-10
As a workaround, do this:
# mkdir -m 755 /var/lib/xfree86 && dpkg --configure xserver-common

I've made sure to have xserver-common and xfree86-common install,
especially since they're dependencies. So I know it's not due to that.
In fact, I've also made s

It would probably be helpful to give the exact transcript of what you
tried to do: which packages did you install with which tool, and what
error message did you get.
The statement that there is no existing config file can simply be
informational, but of course the necessary file should be created
just installing version -6 (-10 is the
current) of xserver-common and using apt-get to grab the rest of the
packages and then manually installing xserver-xfree86 -6, configuring
it, and then upgrading it. Likely far easier ways to handle this but 1)
I didn't have an old XF86Config handy and 2)
There is no Xfree config file anywhere in the system that I can tell.
When I install X, it tells me that it hasn't found the files, so it
won't update them. The problem is that they're just not being created.

On Debian sid, I've been trying to install xfree86. After installation
(including xserver-xfree86, xserver-common, and xfree86-common), it
seems there was a problem creating /etc/X11/XF86Config-4, /etc/X11/X,
and /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config. Long story short, they're not there. I'v
