I'm guessing that you may have invalid access rights to the sound
daemons. Have you recently started using esd or have you always been a
user in group audio and esd worked before?

sound on my system worked fine until a recent upgrade to the latest kde
packages. I'm running debian unstable. Sound is through a via686a chip,
with sound support built into the kernel. No alsa or oss on system.
