Since updating to kernel 3.16-1-686-pae (and with newer ones), when
I start X I usually get a back-lit blank screen. Switching back to
vt1 usually works (shows the X dialog); switching to vt7 a second
time usually works (shows my X session), but sometimes not. Once X
works, going back to vt1 almo

I am really new to this though I have tried several times over the years since

I installed debian on this HP compaq about 3 weeks ago.
Some how I have screwed up the login screen.
It loads up and starts X and it was giving me a login screen.
Now all I get is a black screen, it still plays the

I don't care if it is free or not. If it is well known and is available

"Me-too" here -- I am also running an 8600GT using the nvidia driver.
I installed it using "their way" after the Debian way wasn't working
for a while. (I also had blank screens with the nv driver, though I
could just never get X to launch at all; the whole system froze using
that driver for me).
No screen savers or BOINC - nothing special. Usual server stuff stock
kernel/samba/nfs/amd etc. I use xset +dpms every night at 11pm and
remove it at 8am in the morning.

Lots and Lots of Linux users has adopted wide screen monitor(e.g. 1440*900
resolution for 19')
But debian 4.0 test edition hasn't resolved the display problem. Wish the
standard distribution
can correctly detected the adapter type(like Intel G946, 810 set) and wide
screen monitor type.

I've recently installed debian etch. changed vertical refresh rate system

Gnome Logon Screen's vertical refresh rate won't change to system's vertical
refresh rate. Is there
anyway to fix this?
Thanks.

I had similar problems.
I'm running a Shuttle NForce2 (SN41G2, IIRC) machine with the DVI card,
sid, x.org, 2.6.14 (maybe 2.6.15?), kde, the nvidia closed drivers and

The symptom was that when I rebooted, X w

Hello
As it seems now one knows about the problem I'm having with my old
nvidia TNT card (see mail below) I thought I'd keep you posted with
updates of my attempts to correct this poblem so far. I'm compiling new
kernel and installing 0.8174 modules to see if they solve the problem.

Hello
I have just recompiled my kernel, now running 2.4.27. I compiled the
nvidia kernel from source 0.7174 (I have a TNT card) and the module
installation went smoothly, nvidia-glx for 0.7174 was also installed.
However, I now have a black screen whenever I try to run X with the
