I reinstalled debian and doesn't appears anymore, but I don't know why.

Well I think that it is ATIIXP. Here is the lspci output:

Actually I want DMA enabled and by switching DMA off I would like to see if there still appears some errors, but I think a better ideea is to check with smartctl.
I use the latest kernel 2.6.17.13 and I have ATIIXP chipset.

Maybe this is related to the fact that BIOS sets the HDD's DMA. If I
enter the BIOS it shows that the HDD is set to dma mode 5 so maybe I
should disable dma in the kernel if the bios anyway sets the DMA

Clearly John's driver is doing DMA; otherwise all the DMA errors
wouldn't be present.

Which motherboard do you have?

While I'm no expert, I believe the standard IDE driver in sarge DOES
support dm

Hi,
I have two IDE drives connected together using lvm. The drives are quite new,
the motherboard is quite old. I put a single ext3 partition on top of lvm
which is used for temporary large data sets. I get the following error
messages from dmesg:
EXT3 FS on dm-0, internal journal
