I think before sending him to FAQ you could have given

most discouraging thing in Linux for a beginner is to
start going through thousands of pages of man, FAQs

If you have a GUI (which is pretty much a given if you're running
Netscape or Mozilla), X is already running.

Try this: apt-get install xfree86
Then try startx. If that doesn't work, then you've gotta configure it,
which is a whole nother can of worms (and explained in the howtos at
http://www.linuxdoc.org/)

I just noticed that it only does this in KDE! My .xsession-errors has
KCharset: Wrong charset! in it. Time to chuck KDE.

I had this problem to with an earlier Netscape. I'm using 4.06 right now
(though there is 4.07) and it seems to work okay. By the way, the 4.5
final came out just today. The only time I've ever had Linux *really*

I recognize this behaviour. I suppose what is wrong is the netscape has
some, er, `shortcommings' (i.e. bugs). I always use lynx to access the
debian mailing list archives or bug-track system.

That file is an installer for the actual Netscape package.
I installed netscape-4.06 with it and it works perfectly.

Hmmm, try the command alt+2 (that is hold alt and type the number 2).
That is the shortcut key. If you do not have a communicator menu along
the file menu row in Netscape, then whatever you are using is NOT
communicator (4.x).

Thanks for your prompt replies, Shaleh. Unfortunately, I don't seem
to have any icons at all in the lower right hand corner nor any
communicator menu. I guess I chose the wrong package to pull from
netscape or something.

Netscape Messenger (the mail app) can be invoked in two ways:
1) click the second icon on the lower right hand corner (if you can see
it, the icon is of envelopes in a bin)
2) run netscape -mail
