I not use Matlab, but Maple (since a while) on my Debian (Sarge) box:
some lib so files that come with Maple 9 are processor specific,
if you use the bad ones, certain numerical calculations
(such ones which involve large matrices) get far slower.
When I installed Maple 9 on my Debian box,
I am using Matlab 6.5 with Linux as we speak (as I type..), and I have
the feeling it is responds slower than on Windows. I must admit that I
don't have any hard numbers on that, just the previous
Windows-experience on the same pc.

depends on your needs. Matlab works fine for matrix operations and
simulations. If you need more analitical math I recommend Maple. It gives
you the ability to calculate with complex formulas without loosing
precision (exact). For statistical math you can try SPLUS. Most standard

Well it seems that the program was just suffering from PMS. When performing
another strace matlab 2&> output, it decided to start working. Oh well, I
guess Mathworks need to iron out some kinks for their linux version.

ld-linux libs that MATHWORKS compiled the MATLAB binary against and stick
them in one of the Matlab 5.3 directories, probably

The problem is, as Mark Phillips (below) correctly guessed, with libc5
compatibility. The list of linked libraries appeared OK, but further checking
revealed that libg++.so.27 was there and expected to be linked to
