Go with modules for everything that isn't used to boot. You probably

You can find that module in the latest kernel versions. I use it myself.
Either download a pre-built kernel binary (look for kernel-image packages), or

It looks like Michael is absolutely correct about this. I too had a problem

I just added a Creative SB Live! 5.1 card to my machine -- my first
sound card -- and am having trouble with it. On the software side,
everything seems to run just perfectly, but it produces no sound.
Right off the top: I can use normal stero speakers even with a

know what the word means, I just don't know why one would do such a thing to a
soundcard.)

You seem to have the right idea with #1 below. Compiling the modules seems
to be a little tricky for some people, so I'll tell you how I handle it.
Install the alsa-source and other alsa debs. You'll have an
'alsa-driver.tar.gz' file in /usr/src that you'll have to extract yourself

The program refers to /usr/include/.
I used th e dpkg -S command but no file was found.
The other problem is I have installed the libc6-dev.

The things that the instructions left out that I had to do was the
following:
After recompiling, type "make modules" in the kernel source dir
loading soundcore with "insmod soundcore"
then finally "insmod emu10k1.o" where that is appropriate emu10k1 file
copied to the correct directory, as per the

you should open the sblive.o in vi do a search for 2.2.10 ( /2.2.10)
and replace it with 2.2.11 (cw 2.2.11 or r 1)
then you dont have to force and you dont get that mess "this isnt what i was

Jim, Creative offers a binary-only module for the Live! card -- you can

This webpage contains a module for the sb-live soundcard. But in the README it
states that one must use a non-SMP kernel, and that is not very good news f
I have a SoundBlaster Live! value as well. The drivers are compiled for
2.2.5, but I used 'insmod -f sblive.o' to force them to load, and they
loaded fine. Of course there is nothing to adjust Enviromental Audio,
etc, but better than nothing.
Creative is just terrible with drivers. The no sourc
