Hi all, thanks for trying to help, and sorry for the late answer.
Yes gdm was working fine before. And now it is displaying a pretty image and i
can type a user name and its pass normaly and then gdm tries to start a win
manager but then instead of having wmaker working, it goes back to the gdm

Look in /var/log/gdm for the relevant log files, which should be helpful
