Turn off plug-and-play if you can. If not, copy the kernel from the rescue disk to your hard disk, and re-run LILO. You might have to build a kernel with plug-and-play enabled - I don't know why you have a different kernel on the rescue disk and on your hard disk if you have not already done that.
