I managed to solve this with the help of the people on
gmane.comp.video.mplayer.user - with the option
'-vo xv' to mplayer (mplayer1) the error message
disappears with no loss of functionality or undesired
side-effects to it.

At least with mpv you can use -vo vaapi for accelerated video on Intel
