This will swap your left windows and alt keys, so you can use Alt for
Meta and (in wmaker and probably other window managers) the windows
key to switch windows.
1. Use xkeycaps to rearrange the keyboard how you'd like, and save the
modifications in a file such as ~/.xmodmap. Mine looks like th

Hi!
I noticed that in Debian Woody the Alt key does not work as Meta key when
using Emacs 21 under X (XFree 4.1.0.1). What do I have to put in my .emacs
file to get it to work? (I was looking at the FAQ using Help->Emacs FAQ,
but found nothing there.) Searching with google revealed:

Thanks
That was driving me mad. Strangely now I know that the Windows key is meta I
might leave it as it is, means that key now has a use :)

Hi
I am running a Woody system and cannot get Alt to work as Meta in
Xemacs. I have just installed Xemacs and havent added any config for it
yet but have tried modifying the XF86Config-4 file thus:
Option "LeftAlt" "Meta"
Option "RightAlt" "Meta"
This didnt help. I

I've sent you my XF86Config. If you still get this behavior with my
configuration then I don't know what to do.

Hi Joerg,
to answer you question let me attache the answer I got when I asked the same
question quite some time ago. Works perfectly for me every time I updated ;-)

I can understand you. The next
Hi there
Emacs is using the windows key as "meta". I'd like to use Alt instead,
because I'm used to it from when I was running SuSE and RedHat. Is there
an emacs-specific command for the .emacs file to do that?
thanks

I just use xkeycaps to redefine the keys.
Check dselect for it. Am I following this thread correctly?

I've been rather fighting the inconsistancies myself. I might get to
fixing up console someday.
Oh yeah, there's something called ICCCM which xemacs follows under X which
among other things describes a method (IMO the Right Way) to
consistantly read and interpret keypresses.
Basically (going f

Hello,
I feel like this should be a simple thing to do, but I haven't
been able to figure it out so far. I want XEmacs to my Left Alt key as
the Meta key. It works like that when I am running XEmacs from the
console. However, if I run XEmacs from XWindows ESC is my meta key and
Left-Alt is
