"alternatives" (in the debian repository) are crap (comparing features
and usability).

yes - sure. I install rootstrap via debian-apt ... and i just checked
it already.

I have problems with the debian-package of user-mode-linux.

I use Debian-Sarge and installed the following packages : rootstrap
user-mode-linux uml-utilities umlrun
after that i tried to build a root-fs with rootstrap ... my
bootstrap-config is :
i type "rootstrap test_uml_img" ... ang get
Which bootloader are you using ? (lilo, grub ?) And whats the config ?
Check the config .. maybe kernel is set directly there and not via
/vmlinuz symlink.
