file. It works now on vm but has issue with baremetal for which i'll

country settings may be different from mine.
I have found wvdial pretty good at establishing a connection and
negotiating authentication. It has saved me a lot of bother in the past.

sounds like twm or similar nasty WM...
try running 'kdm' or similar rather than startx, that should let you
