Yes, you may safely run dual-boot
If you're not familiar with linux don't even try to delete WinXp until you
get fully working system.

in sarge (oowriter, koffice, abiword) only oowriter reads and writes properly
MS Word's more advanced formattings - shadowed backgrounds, etc. As most
people are using MS, oowriter seems quite raisonable choice.

Debian can autoplay DVD's and music
CD's, but you have to set explicitely the program that will open the disc
in gnome settings. standard is xine.
You could record your autorunning CDs
as mixed - music/data CD with dummy music track and replace xine with some
