I've had the same problem on Ubun
I'm going to buy a second disk to add to my system. I want to mirror my
current LVM setup for redundancy. So far, on older systems, I've always
used software RAID 1 or 5 arrays with LVM on top. I've never had any
problems with it, mainly because I've been lucky and have never had disk
failures.

I've had similar problems with my nVidia 7050/630a chipset and Etch. If I
used the the stock 2.6.18 kernel, the screen filled up with those "Sata
link is down, taking too much time to respond." messages during boottime.
I think I didn't even see a prompt because it took too long to get there.
