I'm running the generic S3 SVGA server, and it works fine, but only at what
looks like 600 x 800.
This is no matter what I do with [CTRL] and [ALT] and +/-.
This is also no matter what I specify in manually editing XF86Config OR in
running xf86config
OR in running XFSetup.

I ^C'd a deslect install, and since then, both deslect and apt won't even
update properly.
They both refer to the aborted tetex install, and suggest updating. When I
enter 'Apt-get update', it just goes throught the same process, suggesting I
may want to update.

I just installed a new SVGA Xserver. It works great, but all of the fonts in
the mouse menus are illegible. They look a little like bar codes.
Occasionally, ONE item in a parent menu will become legible, but only
fleetingly.
Has anybody dealt with this before?
Thanks,
Tom
My apt_source has both ftp sites and cds listed on it.
How does apt determine which source to try first? Do I need to take the cd's

Potato is not letting me shutdown, even as root.
'shutdown -h now' is getting a 'Command not found' message.
Same for halt and reboot. All of these have working man pages, BTW.
I would be grateful for any words of advice.
I notice that when I stop a process, I sometimes get a file from it like this:
#foo.txt# or #.foo.
What are these? Are they safe to rm?
Thanks in advance.

This is good-- but one thing I've run into as the rankest
Is there a single .*rc kind of file where I establish the info for my POP3
server (their DNS #, url, etc.) and that is referred to by mail, fetchmail,
emacs, etc?
Or do I need to put that info in *each* .*rc file?
Retrieving mail via http is non problem, but I want to use emacs.

I reconfigured both ~./bash_profile and ~/.bashrc to work properly, and they
do- ls is automatically aliased as --color, etc.
But at login, I still get a '~/.bash_profile: permission denied' error.
When I look at the permissions, I'm listed as the owner. I did these changes as
an ordinary user
I've RTFM, but I'm still not sure what the best place to put stuff I want to
happen at login is.
Is it safe to append stuff like 'alias ls='ls --color'' to the .bash_profile?
Will that even work? .bashrc has that in it, uncommented, but it doesn't kick
in.
I'd appreciate any help.
My machine --running potato-- claimed not to know either nslookup or
traceroute. No man pages, either.
Are there Debian equivalents to these commands?
Thanks.

I have a PS/2 mouse. My XF86config file is set to /dev/psaux.
My mouse doesn't do anything upon starting X.
So I tried making a soft link from /dev/psaux to /dev/mouse. Nada.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
Could someone suggest some links where I can learn the concept of runlevels?
I'm not seeing it in any glossaries, and I don't think I found it in the manual.
Thanks!

How do I create a new group?
I installed Potato on an HP Pavilion 7020 last night, and everything went
swell, except when I was dselecting the lp module, I got these errors:
/lib/modules/2.2.17/misc/lp.o: init_module: device or resource busy
/lib/modules/2.2.17/misc/lp.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.2.17/misc/lp.o failed
/lib
/modules/2.2.17/misc/lp insmod failed
So, how do I install this module? Will I have to recompile the kernel?
The mod is required to print, no?

You might check the Debian Mail archives for the past couple of months;
there's been quite a bit of discuss
Two things:
I'm running potato, and I know my mouse is a ps/2, but it won't respond at
all when I'm running the VGA server.
As for the SVGA server, I get this on startx:

How would I save a LILO configuration to a floppy's MBR, so as to run LILO from

Thanks to everyone for the ongoing responses to my newbie dreck.
Why, when I MKBOOT VMLINUZ-2.2.12, would the system come back to me on three
different BRAND NEW disks with a "write protected or other error"?
I really doubt it's the disks. Is there a known problem with that version?
Using xf86config, when I run the autoprobe for a clock chip line, the screen
blanks, then comes back with an 'autoprobe call failed' error line.
Meanwhile, X will kind of start, but all I get is a blue screen and an immobile
