solved. I'll copy the Debian ones over into my ~/.muttrc.

Still no good. I tried fiddling with my TERM variable too, to change
it from "rxvt&

point. I thought that maybe vi would chop the lines up upon exit, but
it doesn't. Is there another companion setting that will force a new
line (and let you see this happening as you type)?
