I got a new computer and brought it to my college, and installed Debian on
it. However, when i installed it, i couldn't get the module for my NE2000
compatible driver to install correctly. Does anyone know how to reinstall?
I couldn't find a package for it. I do have the driver disk for dos,

I'm planning on installing Debian on my new computer, but I want to keep my
Win98 system and dual-boot. I started with a 6 gig drive divided into 2 3
gig partitions. I then made two new partitions from the D drive, one 2 gig
partition for Debian, and a 64 meg partition for the swap file. I us
Use Xf86config first...that may do the trick.

Probably because Debian doesn't want to force KDE on people who like GNOME.
Is there a page that discusses the merits of each system? I've only used
GNOME so far, and I've found it to be rather slow.

Why not try using disks? My computer got hit by lightning years ago and it's
CDROM is fried. I just went with floppies, worked fine.

If you're not starting gnome by hand, just create a new one using vi or
whatever. type in :
panel &
exec gnome-session.
This'll start your panel and GNOME. I'm not familiar with e, i use ICE
myself, so i can't help you there.

What does your .xsession file say? You might not have panel listed as
booting up.

You probably don't have the packages for X windows installed. Go to the
Debian package list and get what you need.

The problem is that I killed Win95 completely...my system is linux only right

When you first set up your computer, you had to put in a password. To access
this account, type "su". Then just type the password. This will give you
full access to everything. Alternatively, you can log in as "root" and your
password. Hope this helps

Did you use a & mark after execing panel in your .xsession file? That may
have caused the problem.

I'm installing my debian system from floppy disk, since I cannot use
internet, due to having an AOL account (stupid parents.) Is there a way I
can take large files and get them onto floppy disks? Even compressing some
files wouldn't allow them to be transferred, and I was wondering if there wa
Does anyone know how to do this? I went through all the usr/doc files, but I
couldn't find anything that would let me turn the panel off. Thanks.

I recently have installed GNOME by hand, using the task*.deb gnome files as
references to what I needed to install. I installed all of the dependencies
of the task*.deb files except for a few files that had to do with audio. I
currently have a few problems:

Go to the main FTP for Debian, and you can find the package for SVGA.

I'm trying to install GNOME by hand, and I need to install libgnome32 to
continue. When I try to install it, I am told that it depends on having
libgnomeui32 installed. But when I try to install that, it says i need to
already have libgnome32 in. This happens with a few other files, also.

Are there any nationwide ISPs around for Linux users? I'm using AOL, which
doesn't support Linux, and there aren't any Linux ISPs in my area. It'd make
it a lot easier on me for upgrading if I could get onto the internet. Does
anyone know of anything like this?

If i recall,i had that problem. Just use the command "umount" with the same
parameters as mount that you used, and then you can use mount again without a
problem.

I am trying to install GNOME onto my other computer from floppies. What is
the easiest way to do this? I went to the url given with the original email,
and it talked about task* packages, yet they aren't on the FTP site. What do

Thank you, thank you, thank you... it turns out it was a ps/2 device, which
meant i needed to use the psaux file. Thank you all for helping me out here

How do I install a mouse on debian? I need one for X, and i haven't seen any
