THey are detected in PCI order... so the lowest numbered PCI slot first,
and then in order. So this depends on your motherboard. In my case they
are numbered from low to high in the case. Check your mobo
documentation.

It will work without problems on any decent computer... I use a K6-350
with plextor 12 speed and aopen-dvd reader.

My laptop has built-in firewire, but your best guess is any card that
has the Texas Instruments chipset. So look for the Ti logo on the card
before buying it.
Most firewire cards are becoming quite cheap. I've seen as low as EUR
40.

You'd better go for firewire then. I have the maxtor firewire 80 GB.
It works like a charm in both linux and windows... it's faster than USB1
(and 2)... and it work with a standard 2.4 kerne

woody is very near, and could be released any day now,
the new boot-floppies work perfectly.
I think you should check md5sums of files you download, or maybe use a
better downloading system, like rsync.

If you don't want something started then you can probably tell dpkg to
only install it, and not yet configure it (man dpkg, man apt*) or just
shut it down after installing (man update-rc).
