The "Grub terminal" is required when Grub install has botched up
something.
If you get some scrolling messages, after BIOS POST, chances are that
your graphics card has some problems.
Is there a /var/logs/Xorg.0.log file? Any hints in there?

Was myself using nvidia binary drivers for some time, I had gone through
the hell on an upgrade. Finally gave up on gnome3, 3D and reverted back
to nouveau (and gnome2). Took another 3 hours to figure out that
xorg.conf needs to be deleted.

I usually use the stable business card / netinst ISOs, and then directly
upgrade to testing / unstable releases.
I first install aptitutde and dpkg; libc6, the kernel, _reboot_ and then
install the remaining packages.
