I installed that but didn't find out how to get it to work.
In /etc/console , I found these 2 files:

Hi list,
I do hope this isn't too stupid a question.
My system is configured to start x on login. Whenever I try to log into
a non-x console with ctrl-alt-Fn, either as root or a normal user, the
prompt claims "login incorrect".
I'm not sure if that's meant to signify "password incorrect" for that
Thanks to all who answered to this!
Really overwhelming by all the useful information.
Thanks,

Barry,
su -m surely does it. So what property that's carried over is it that
makes the difference?
Thanks!

Hi List,
I use KDM over GDM because I found it lets me log in with X as root,
which I found especially useful in the beginning when I was setting up
lots of stuff.
Normally I log in as a normal user but sometimes I need to su to root
and would like to start for instance an editor, or something li

Hi,
I'm running testing so I added
deb http://marillat.free.fr/ testing main
to my sources.list.
Checked out what's in there (lots of neat looking stuff) and tried to
get some of it with dselect (after updating).
updating claims success regarding that site but in dselect *select* the

Thanks guys,
I did switch to vsftpd, and in the end it worked, but the first thing
that happened on testing was that any connection was outright refused.
Turns out the problem was that in inetd.conf ftp was commented as such:

from lsmod, this doesn't seem to be the case.
I would suppose that "use the card but not the jacks" could be the kind
of message that can be transmitted via /etc/modules.conf and the driver
modules, but how could the BIOS transmit such a message to the card?

hi all!
apart from my PC running Debian i have an old Mac, and i need to
transfer lots of files using a crossover cable. the security issues
involving ftp are not important here because i just need to get this to
work temporarily.
i've installed wu-ftp using dselect. so far, i found some configur
hi all,
someone recently mentioned in a java related thread that it was
necessary to compile libc or glibc to get Java2 to run, if i remember
correctly. is that the case?
i'm running "testing", and installed J2SDK1.3.1 from blackdown without
any apparent problems.

hi all!
i'm running Debian Woody (testing) on an old Compaq Deskpro. the
machine has audio in and out jacks, but didn't seem to have usable
audio capabilities, so i bought a soundblaster card.
soundwise, the modules i've loaded:
emu10k155712 0 (unused)
ac97_codec 9
Thanks for the responses, guys!
The apt-get update and apt-get dist-upgrade took care of it.
I guess it was pretty naive of me to just run dselect...
The error also does come up with apt-get update but there it doesn't hang the install
script.
Makes all the difference :-)

Hi,
I just switched from Debian Woody stable to testing (by substituting the 'stable' in
/etc/sources.list with 'testing' - I hope that's the right way).
This seemed to go quite smoothly. Afterward the initial dselect *update* and dselect
*install* run
had finished, I ran dselect *select* to che
but a *.tar.gz), do I just put the bttv.o into the
/lib/modules/... right place or is that a no-no?
If a *.deb is available, I'm sure it will be "unstable". Is it ok to run stable or
testing and
just have a bttv unstable or should I switch the whole thing to unstable?

Hi list,
After switching from a mono Hauppauge WinTVgo to a WinTV-PCI-FM (model 647) (PAL-B/G

it for days

I was convinced that the Conexant decoder is a BT878, but it doesn't actually mention
Some places on the net and in my local docs mention a CARDLIST file, that I'm supposed
to check
for the card= option for bttv.
On my Debian Woody system, a file of that name is nowhere. Is there a place on the net
where that
file can be found?
Also, I'm getting more confused about /etc/modules
Hi,
I just switched from a Hauppauge WinTV Go to a WinTV-PCI-FM (model647).

WinTV-PCI-FM is card=10, but I'm not sure.

After installing J2SE 1.4.1 the non-apt way (*.tar.gz) I found it doesn't like the
libraries it
finds on my Debian Woody (stable).
Went back to blackdown.org and followed instructions to add their site to my

They say:

Seneca,
Did the manual install (zlib1g 1:1.1.4-1) and now everything is groovy again.
Apt is happy.

I tried to install Xine (lib-xine and xine-ui) from locally installed debian packages
(that I
downloaded from their site) on my pretty newly installed debian Woody. Before doing
that, I had
changed /etc/aps/sources.list from CD to a net URL and got updates from stable main
contrib
