Try xconfig to set up x. Plain vesa drivers might do, but it's better to
have the ones for your hardware. You prob wantot have hardware specs
nearby, otherwise you can manually edit /etc/XF86Config-4

As sugested, I've updated the kernel to the prebuilt image 2.4.18-k7 from
the woody isos and confirmed the update with uname. It still won't
recognise my usb mouse.

While I wait for my new router, I'm using the official binary CD-rom
images, I installed with woody cds 1 and 2, but now have the whole set. I
have not burned them, they are on the local drive and mounted.
In dselect menu I choose Access and then cdrom, dselect lists the 7
mounted isos correctl

I installed debian GNU/Linux on one of my machines about a fortnight ago
from woody(r2) cds 1-3. I can't get any graphics despite much tinkering.
My level of experiance: windows geek for a long time, but been using sun
unix at university really like KDE. So I'm moving one of my main boxes
