It seems the reason ftp doesn't like this sym link is that the sym link
links to a directory on my win98 file system mounted at /win98. Is there
a way to get around this problem? Thanks.
I have put a sym link in /home/ftp to some other directory on my machine.
However when doing ftp and loging in anonymously and i try to the cd to
the symlink it says no such file or directory. Can anyone help? Thanks
much.
Why when i anonymously ftp to my localhost(127.0.0.1) and i have made
files and directories in /home/ftp/ it doesn't show up when i do an ls
from the ftp session? Any help is much appreciated.
Is there a way to completely lock your screen when you do screen lock from
X? I mean a person could easily type control-alt-backspace or
control-alt-delete and kill your screen lock, or even just
conrtrol-alt-F(x) and get another virtual console or something. Well
thanks in advance for any help.

Have you tried to telnet to your machine from a remote machine? If not
check inetd.conf and make sure telnetd is running there. If it isn't put
it in and then kill -HUP inetd's pid. If you have a default host.allow it
should allow anyone so that is the problem and default hosts.deny is no

I was wondering when you use lilo to manage your boot do you need to add
the line append = "mem=128M" to your win95/98 partition for it to use the
memory beyond 64k or is this only needed when a linux partition is booted?
you can use xbase-configure, xf86config, or XF86Setup to reconfig your X.
As far as lilo goes you need to add a lilo paragraph for your msdos
partition...mine looks something like this.
other = /dev/hda1
label = win98
table = /dev/hda
then rerun lilo to install the new label.
When this is d
I have an STB velocity 128 AGP card and don't see it anywhere in the

how did you set it up for X? Thanks alot for any help.
I recently upgraded my talk and now it seems to be broken. Whenever i try
to talk to someone on my machine it says waiting for [No connection yet]

I want ppp to start at boot time so I made a script that does has the
following lines
#!/bin/sh
pon MY_ISP
i saved this file to /etc/init.d/pppstuff*
then in /etc/rc3.d/ i did ln -s /etc/init.d/pppstuff /etc/rc3.d/S20pppon
this doesn't start my ppp connection at boot..why not?
can anyone help me
I was wondering how to add auto start things to the boot process. For
example in Solaris if i add a command to start process x in rc2.d it will
start at run level 2 and if i put something in rc3.d it will start at run
level three and so on...how is this accomplished in debian?

My apt seems to be completely broken now. I can't get anything to upgrade
or install because of a problem with libc6-dev. It says something about a
broken pipe. Could someone please help?
i do mount /dev/sda4 /zip -t msdos and it says kernel doesn't recognize a
block device at /dev/sda4, i know i compiled my kernel with scsi iomega
support..when i boot i get this message
scsi0 : Iomega parport ZIP drive
scsi : 1 host.

Today when i did apt-get -f upgrade i got this error:

I asked this question yetsterday buy didnt have mail running so might have
missed the response. But could someone mail me the config.sh script the
xmcd seems to need. I can't get mine to work because that script is not
there so it doesn't recognize my cdrom device and such..
thank you.
I have a question regarding RAM, does linux recognize anything over 64M
of ram? I have 128M on my machine and this is what top reports...
CPU states: 0.5% user, 1.1% system, 0.0% nice, 98.5% idle
Mem: 63344K av, 62092K used, 1252K free, 32960K shrd, 17160K buff
Swap: 130748K av, 1416K
I installed xmcd fresh today but it seems the install didn't create the
config.sh. Could someone look if they have theirs..its usually in
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xmcd/config/ and perhaps mail it to me or something.
Maybe there is another problem that i don't know about.
I have an Iomega zip drive that i used in win98, but when i do
mount /dev/sda /zip -t msdos it won't let me saying it doesn't recognize a
block device tehre, anyone know the problem? Perhaps i'm useing the wrong
dev or there is something else?
thanks
When i do this it asks for the file system type?
mount /dev/sda4 /mnt/zip
hmm, it also gives me same message when i do mount /dev/hdc /cdrom
i can't mount devices anymore...ouch..i konw there is easy answer to this
i just forget.
