hen I ran it as root so I could try it out, it
refused to stay connected to the network and instead dropped the connection
after a few minutes, and (c) I would really prefer networking to be available
at boot time as opposed to after I log in so e.g. ntpd can start up at boot
time.

Could it be that wpasupplicant has trouble connecting to networks with hidden
SSID's without first manually associating the card to that network as above?

Strangely, this occasionally works, but usually I get a failure to connect.
So, what's wrong with this setup, and what do I need to do to get it working
