Thanks for the links, although some of them are out of date for sid.  I had 
missed /usr/share/doc/wpasupplicant/README.modes.gz, which seems to be the 
best information.

Umm, I do have wpasupplicant installed, and I'm not sure what you're trying to 
say here.

I think I may have gotten it working by changing the last stanza to:

...
iface wireless inet dhcp
        wireless-essid linksys_*
        wpa-driver wext
        wpa-ssid linksys_*
        wpa-psk ***

Could it be that wpasupplicant has trouble connecting to networks with hidden 
SSID's without first manually associating the card to that network as above?
