system requirements for debian

2006-01-15 Thread Bob Hynes
I have debian running on a 500Mhz box with 256MB ram. It's pretty slow...slower than windows would be. Is there anyone who know what I could be doing to speed things up? turning off services, adding ram? I'm also considering tying another version of Linux, but maybe this box is just too slow at

repositories

2005-12-22 Thread Bob Hynes
Does anyone happen to have a link or a list of repositories other than the standard/default one that come with a fresh Debian install? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

VPN client to Windows network

2005-12-21 Thread Bob Hynes
Is there a commonly used VPN client for Debian? I'd like to vpn to a windows network at work, but I'm not sure if there is something that works like the VPN client built in to XP (which is what I currently use). -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". T

Remote Desktop to Windows server

2005-12-21 Thread Bob Hynes
Can anyone tell me exactly what I need to do to a remote desktop session from a Debian workstation to a Windows 2000 server? I can do it easily from Windows XP, but I don't really know the steps for Debian or the syntax involved. I tried looking this up in the KDE help file, but it's pretty use

repository updates

2005-12-12 Thread Bob Hynes
Hello, Does anyone know why it takes so long for synaptic package manager to come up with updates? Openoffice.org and firefox 1.5 have been out for awhile, but I'm still not seeing that as an upgrade option. Am I missing something, or does it just take a long time for repositories to get updated w

remote desktop and VPN

2005-11-30 Thread Bob Hynes
Hello, does anyone have a recommendation as far as a good VPN client goes? My plan is to use a VPN to connect to work, then a Windows-like remote desktop client to do a remote control. I do this with XP already, just curious if anyone has done this with Debian. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMA

screen resolution

2005-11-25 Thread Bob Hynes
Can someone remind me how to change the screen resolution in Debian when the "Configure - Desktop" application doesn't have the option for 1024 X 768? I can't get anything higher than 832 X 624 at 75Hz. I know the system is capable of it with Windows. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED

best cheap sound card

2005-10-25 Thread Bob Hynes
Hello, I'm researching sound cards. I'd like to get something cheap (under $50) that Debian will probably support with no problem. My first inclination is always sound blaster, but any ideas? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL

screen re-painting

2005-10-22 Thread Bob Hynes
Hey, I've been using Debian for about a week now and have been noticing that the screen *often* has problems repainting...pieces of the last screen I was looking at show up on the screen that I have active until I move windows around, etc...I'm sure everyone has seen that. My machine is a 350MHz

sound card config?

2005-10-20 Thread Bob Hynes
Hello, is there a way to "reconfigure" a sound card? Mine works in Windows, but it isn't working in Debian...it's old, but I'd rather try to use it than buy another one if I can. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

changing default resolution

2005-10-19 Thread Bob Hynes
OK, so I'm a newby and I admit it. I have Debian installed with both KDE and GNOME running. The default resolution is 832X624 with 24 depth. Is there any way to change this?? I would like to get 1024X768. I know my monitor is capable of this because it used to run Windows at this resolution...maybe
