Firstly, thanks Tom for asking about the udev version. Since I cannot boot the system I can't ask udev directly; however in /var/cache/apt/archives, the only udev pkg is 164-3. - I think I'm closer to understanding the problem. To clear up one thing: the system is partway to grub-2.

What I did was "sudo aptitude --no-gui", and type u, then U and g, and choose among proposed conflict resolutions. I didn't know actually this is called safe-upgrade. I will try directly run "sudo aptitude full-upgrade" in terminal. I admitted that I wasn't really sure about the appropriate proc
