Well, sort of solved. I ended up purging ssh and reinstalling it. (I had to
do dpkg --purge, not just dpkg -r, so I must have had something wrong in one
of the config files.)
Now, all is working well.

One more thing, you are running this as the root user are you not?
Because SSHD is not normally suid and sgid root, so it cannot access those
files unless you are the root user.

applies, had to use id for font AA in KDE...but am back to GNOME again

I seem to only be able to access three fonts in KDE (Bitstream Charter,
Courier 10 Pitch & Cursor)for some strange reason. Everything seems to
be fine under GNOME.
Even if I load up a KDE application in GNOME like kdevelop - the fonts

Before I get into hot water, I was wondering what the pros and cons are
to using Ximian's Red Carpet over Debian's package management system
for maintaining my version of GNOME and Evolution on potato. Are there
potential pitfalls?
