I downloaded the network install ISO from
http://gluck.debian.org/cdimage/testing/netinst/i386/daily/
dated Nov 6. I am installing on an dual PIII box (i.e. SMP) with
aic7xxx SCSI and two via-rhine ethernet cards.
After rebooting I examined the file /etc/network/interfaces, all it
contained were two comment lines. I added the lines
auto eth1
iface eth1 inet dhcp
and ran 'ifup eth1', that brought up the interface, negotiated a DHCP
lease, etc.

I have just realised this is a duplicate of bug 218617,
"netcfg: No network config in sarge netinstall"
