This appears to happen because of a conflict between glibc and gcc headers on alpha when _GNU_SOURCE=1 is enabled. Bug has been filed on this, #134558. One possible workaround is to use gcc-3.0. I tried getting this package to compile, but it does really broken, incorrect things with automake.
