I just got an iBook G4 and I am installed Ubuntu-MATE 15.04 and Debain
Jessie on it. Now in MATE to get sound to work I added the snd-aoa-i2sbus
module and set the PCM channel to 80 and all was well. However I did the
exact same thing in Jessie and I am getting no sound. I added the other

it is not a powermac.
its not a volume issue. i hear fine just strange sounds. alsamixer set to 99 or

As I already told, it works on my iBook with Squeeze (and Ubuntu,
too). I assume yours is a PowerBook6,5, too?
Looks like snd-aoa is not even trying to support this machine, snd-powermac is.
And Ubuntu 10.04 uses the same version of kernel, 2.6.32. But it is

I have been having this same trouble of no working sound for months.
So recently, after installing the latest kernel from sid and seeing no benefit,
I thought based upon web posting of other people that the problem was the older
released alsa drivers. So I went directly to the alsa web site

Hi Mitchell,
I have an almost identical machine: 1.07 Ghz model iBook G4 (early
2004). So I did two simple tests:
First I changed input to Mic in alsamixer, then recoded some sound:
arecord -f cd t.wav
and played it back:
aplay t.wav
Second I played this file:

I also tried banning the snd-powermac driver and not banning the other drivers
and
that gave me no sound with an error from Alsa when I tried to run mpg321 etc
however when i then did modprobe snd-powermac
i got the terrible scratching sound and no music or voice as before.

Hi I have been using debian squeeze and now sid on a ibookg g4 1.2Ghz which i
believe is a late 2004 machine - 30G harddrive.
Some time ago (way before squeeze) sound stopped working at all.
instead I get a scratchy terrible sound that sounds like someone blowing air
under their tongue
We (thank you, Tom, for testing) have found a solution to the
remaining problem with silent Pro Speakers (2.5 mm jack). A patched

I should have added yesterday, external speakers plugged into the 2.5 mm stereo
mini jack sound port still did not work on the PowerMac G4 DA, only the internal
speaker and the headphone jack. Today, after fiddling around with alsamixer
trying to unmute what comes up as two headphone jacks
