Doesn't sound good (the unresolved symbol). I'd say your X is busted,
either gentoo has a busted version or you are missing some

The shutdown of the chip is under control of the PMU which I don't think
can be told to not do it (or if it can, I don't know how).

i have been successfully running gentoo and Xorg on my 15" aluminum
powerbook for quite some time now. however, after i ran emerge --update

new Powerbook 12" (PowerBook6,8) 1.5GHz with a (f*cking) nvidia NV34M
GeForce FX Go5200.
I installed debian unstable and have some problems with it:
