Thanks for the response - I followed up my post with an explanation
that I found a clue on Debian-User: I hadn't included Socket_Filtering
- I did so, recompiled and Hey Presto DHCP works ;-)

Currently I'm still dual booting (MacOSX) using Yaboot 1.3.8.
I recompiled the kernel for SMP support and after a couple of tries the
new kernel compile
