For the IEEE 1394 subsystems in the newer kernels, you need to run
/sbin/rescan-scsi-bus.sh (from the scsitools package) to get any
attached devices recognized. insmod'ing or modprobe'ing individual
1394 modules no longer work. I encountered the same issue a while
back when I upgraded from 2.4.18

I have a "SmartDisk FireWire CD-R/W Drive" (the kernel reports it as
TEAC CD-W28E) which works with kernel 2.4.19 (debian package). With
kernels 2.4.21 (debian) and 2.4.21-ben2 it does no longer get
recognized.
I modprobe ohci1394 and sbp2, then the drive led's flash and the drive
spins up, but
