Well, that would certainly explain why, whatever I try (and I had
already tried chmod-ing /dev/dsp, as those who wrote to me off-list
suggested, and that just changed the error message

Looks like rawplay is trying
I can't make rawplay (from rawrec 0.9.98-1) work on my G4 PowerBook.
Whether it is run as root or not, I always get the following error
(for instance, when executing it without any argument):
rawplay: SNDCTL_DSP_SETFMT ioctl on /dev/dsp failed: Invalid argument
zsh: exit 1 rawplay

Basically, you shouldn't have to know the details. It's a bug in Debian
that your sound doesn't work out of the box. Stu
Your suggestion did work. Thank you very much, Brad.
I had no idea about dmasound_pmac... By the way, how should a newcomer
learn about these model specific details? I find myself spending huge
amounts of time trying to do this (and MANY other) seemingly simple tasks.

To give yourself access to the audio device:
adduser yourusername audio
And make sure that group audio has read/write access to /dev/dsp and
/dev/mixer
Now logout of gnome or kde, then log back in. You should have audio
now.
