open mac*.fr and change macintosh/us(extended) to macintosh/fr(extended)
you'll notice an entire heirarchy for this stuff in /etc/X11/xkb

so far i havent been able to locate an xinit or startx in XF4.0.1-11.deb

/dev/input/mouseX where X is a number miight work
try cat /dev/input/mouseX and move teh mouse around and see if you get
any input... until you get the right number

even though mach64 is detected at boot, since i am using the latest yaboot
