On my G4, I notice that the in-kernel cpufreq governors refuse to work
supposedly because the G4 takes too much time switching frequency.
So what else should I use?

If you're using yaboot, you can edit /etc/yaboot.conf to append something
like "video=radeonfb" or "video=atyfb" to your boot arguments. read the man
page (could be man 5 yaboot.conf on Ubuntu?) Three warnings apply:

I have a PowerBook G4 Titanium running Ubuntu 8.04 LTS. When I reboot
it it doesn't always set the graphics mode correctly. The yaboot starts
and I can read the text but when it switches to graphics, I get a
