I suspect it could be kernel config or XF86Config. I have the latest xfree86 from Debian unstable and it reports itself as 4.2.99. It recognises the Geforce4 440 Go OK so I assume this xserver is OK. I will stick with it and try some new kernel configs and XF86Configs first, before trying so
