Just another note on this. It seems that when ever I try to start up
linux after booting into Open Firmware, and fail like I have described
below, the next time I boot into OS X the time is set back to
12/31/1969.
I assume this is going to be a larger problem when the retail version of
Panther is

I am installing System 7.5.3 which I downloaded for free to my PC. I
made a ISO 9660 CD-ROM containing all the files. Then I booted up the
mac using "disk tools". The problem is, that system can't read ISO 9660
CD's! So now I would like to create a HFS-CD in my PC.
I've read that this is possible

And how do you do that? The same way I posted some time ago? Does it
work for all clients (like, xterm/rxvt)?

You should be able to use the network card just fine in your 7600. The
only PCI cards that are cross-platform compatible are those that are
needed for booting, such as video cards and hard drive controllers. The
PCI specs are platform independent, so once you have the drivers for a

Hello!
Can powermacs use PCI cards built for PC? I have a 7600/132 and a
Realtek 8139 NIC, it would be fun to use two networks so I could use the
computer as a router.
I guess that PCs and Macs use different PCI standards, and holy smoke
will come out of the mac if I put the card in.

I have my Debian ppc system dual booting with OSX. Last night I
installed the Panther beta. I expected it to write over my boot
partition, and of course after the install it booted right into OSX
instead of giving me yaboot.
No fear I say, as I hold the key combo to get me into open firmware.

just to be clear ('cause I think you may be getting the patch step
wrong). try something like this:
$ tar xfj linux-2.4.20.tar.bz2
$ cp -rl linux-2.4.20 linux-2.4.21
$ cd linux-2.4.21
$ bzcat ../patch-2.4.21.bz | patch -p1

$ cd linux-2.4.21-ben2

For the IEEE 1394 subsystems in the newer kernels, you need to run
/sbin/rescan-scsi-bus.sh (from the scsitools package) to get any
attached devices recognized. insmod'ing or modprobe'ing individual
1394 modules no longer work. I encountered the same issue a while
back when I upgraded from 2.4.18

Hi
I have a "SmartDisk FireWire CD-R/W Drive" (the kernel reports it as
TEAC CD-W28E) which works with kernel 2.4.19 (debian package). With
kernels 2.4.21 (debian) and 2.4.21-ben2 it does no longer get
recognized.
I modprobe ohci1394 and sbp2, then the drive led's flash and the drive
spins up, but
