Well, I've made some progess. What I needed was the file drivers.tgz, not either of the files driver-1.bin or driver-2.bin. Not sure what they're for. Once I was able to install my modules, I could enable the use of the ppp and compression modules. And _somewhere_ on a web page that some helpfu

I booted into the potato install, dropped to a shell, and mount my root FS. It looks like util-linux was updated today. I just moved the hwclock executable and made a link to /bin/true for now...at least I can boot into my system now. "Setting System Clock using the Hardware Clock as reference..."
