Welcome to Debian!
There are a lot of different ways someone can get started contributing to
Debian. Some of

https://mentors.debian.net/intro-maintainers/[1]
I would recommend reading over the resources on that page. If you have any
questions as
you go, this mailing

the starting steps would be to someone with my background. Any help is

Ah, I just found:
https://readme.phys.ethz.ch/documentation/debian_version_numbers/
So for xserver-xorg-video-savage_2.3.8-1, backported to jessie, the
version would be:
xserver-xorg-video-savage_2.3.8-1.1~bpo8+1
rather than
xserver-xorg-video-savage_2.3.8-1+nmu1~bpo8+1
?
Thanks,
Nicholas
Hi,
I've finally gotten comfortable with pbuilder (for both i386 and amd64),
and have done a number of private backports (including Intel 2015Q2
graphics stack) and imports of Ubuntu packages that don't exist in
Debian (eg: snapraid).
Just the other day someone in #debian asked for a backpor

Hi,
I think you should do well to look at the Developers
reference, the Packaging manual, the policy document, and example
rules files, in that order (you may well get bored before you finish
;-). I assure you that the material in those documents is more than

I recently familiarized myself with the debian packaging system and
would like to contribute to the debian distribution. I figure reading
the packing/policy manual is a good place to get the rest of my info.
However when I look at the DDP site much of the information there is
